Project-Based Learning (PBL)
At PPLA PCS, we integrate Project-Based Learning (PBL) into daily instruction using a curriculum that aligns with BCPS Policies 6000 and 6002. Our chosen curricula, including Creative Curriculum, EL Education, and Illustrative Math, are specifically designed to facilitate this hands-on approach. Students engage in real-world learning by conducting research, collaborating with peers, and presenting their findings through various mediums, enhanced by our partnership with R.I.S.E. Arts Center. We use continuous data collection from observations and project artifacts to develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure not only academic achievement but also critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity, ensuring our PBL approach effectively prepares students for success.
For Pre-K, PBL is integrated with the Creative Curriculum through play-based projects like building a model community or a class garden, which fosters collaboration and early literacy. In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, projects like investigating the life cycle of butterflies or designing simple machines build foundational skills in literacy, math, and science while encouraging inquiry and problem-solving. Finally, in 3rd to 5th grade, students tackle more complex, interdisciplinary projects, such as researching local environmental issues or creating a business plan, to develop critical thinking, research, and presentation skills.
